How to Find a Trustworthy Travel Agency in Kerala: Red Flags, Green Flags, and the Questions That Separate Reliable Agents from the Rest
The information every traveller should have before handing over a rupee to a Kerala tour operator — including what we'd tell you to check about us.
By Tour Navigator, Kochi · Updated June 2026 · 9 min read
Kerala's tourism industry includes thousands of travel operators ranging from Kerala Tourism Department-licensed, decade-old firms with physical offices and verified reviews, to WhatsApp-only "travel agents" who set up a phone number and a copied itinerary template. The quality difference is enormous, and the internet doesn't always make it easy to tell them apart — especially because both types can have attractive websites and fake or purchased reviews.
This guide gives you a systematic way to verify any Kerala travel agency before booking — including the specific questions that reveal more about an agency than their website ever will. We'll also apply these checks to ourselves at the end, because we think that's fair.
The best agencies welcome scrutiny. The ones that respond to detailed questions with vague reassurances are telling you something important.
Red Flags vs Green Flags — At a Glance
🚩 Red Flags — Walk Away
✗No physical office address in Kerala — only a mobile number or WhatsApp
✗Prices significantly below market rate — usually means hidden costs or lower quality substitutions
✗Refuses to name specific hotels or houseboat operators in the quotation
✗Requests 100% advance payment before confirming any bookings
✗Payment requested to a personal account rather than a registered company account
✗Generic itinerary with no customisation despite you sharing specific preferences
✗Pressure to "book now before the price goes up" or "only 1 slot remaining"
✗No GST number on the invoice (mandatory for registered businesses in India)
✗Reviews that all sound similar, have no reviewer profile photos, or cluster in a short time period
✗Can't tell you who specifically will be your driver or guide
✅ Green Flags — Good Signs
✓Physical office address you can verify on Google Maps
✓Kerala Tourism Department registration or IATA accreditation
✓Itemised quotation with specific hotel names, houseboat name, and vehicle type
✓GST number and company registration number visible on invoice
✓Payment terms: 25–30% deposit, balance on arrival or day before departure
✓Responds to specific questions with specific answers
✓Proactively mentions limitations or trade-offs in their recommendations
✓Has reviewed and personally stayed in the properties they recommend
✓Google reviews with responses, variety of reviewers, photos attached to reviews
✓Named founder or director — a real person you can trace
The 10 Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Kerala Travel Agency
These are the questions we encourage every traveller to ask — including travellers considering booking with us. The answers reveal far more than any website copy:
1
"Can you tell me the specific name of the houseboat we'll be on?"
Why it matters: A legitimate agent knows exactly which vessels they work with. An answer of "we'll assign a suitable boat" or "it depends on availability" means they haven't pre-booked anything and will give you whatever is left — which is exactly the wrong approach for the most important night of most Kerala trips.
2
"Have you personally stayed at or visited the hotels in my itinerary?"
Why it matters: This separates agents who know their destinations from those who copy hotel names from Booking.com. The honest answer may be "I've visited 8 of the 10 hotels on this list" — that's fine. "We work with the best hotels in each destination" without specifics is not.
3
"What happens if I need to change the itinerary after we leave Kochi?"
Why it matters: Plans change. Weather changes. You love one place and want to stay longer. A legitimate agent has a real contact (usually a driver's mobile number and an office number) who can make changes. An online-only operator may simply not respond to mid-trip requests.
4
"What is your GST registration number and company registration?"
Why it matters: Any Indian travel business above the GST threshold (₹20 lakhs annual turnover) is required to be registered. A legitimate operation will provide this without hesitation. An unregistered operator is operating informally, which creates risk if something goes wrong — there's no regulatory recourse.
5
"What is your cancellation and refund policy in writing?"
Why it matters: Legitimate agencies have clear, written cancellation policies. Ask for it before booking. The terms should specify what percentage is refunded at 30 days, 14 days, and 7 days before travel. An agency that is vague about refund terms is giving you important information about how they operate.
6
"Can you share the mobile number of the driver we'll have?"
Why it matters: A legitimate agency typically has a small pool of trusted drivers they work with repeatedly. They should be able to give you a driver name and contact by 48 hours before your trip. Agencies that "assign a driver closer to the date" often have no committed driver and are booking whoever is available on the day.
7
"What exactly is not included in this price?"
Why it matters: Low quotations often exclude items that inevitably arise — entry fees, tips, fuel surcharges, "tourist taxes," activity costs. A transparent agency will list exclusions clearly. If the agent answers this question vaguely, expect surprise costs on the trip.
8
"Can you show me a Google review from someone I can contact to ask about their experience?"
Why it matters: Fake reviews are increasingly sophisticated, but real reviewers leave real names. If you can find a reviewer on LinkedIn or Facebook and send a quick message to verify their experience, that's a powerful signal. Most legitimate agents will have reviewers they'd happily put you in touch with.
9
"What do you recommend I don't do on this trip, and why?"
Why it matters: This is a disarming question because most agencies are only trained to sell. An agent who says "I'd skip [Activity X] — it's overpriced for what it is, and your time is better spent at [Alternative Y]" is demonstrating genuine expertise and your-interests-first thinking. An agent who says everything is excellent and fully recommended has different priorities.
10
"What will you do if the houseboat we're booked on is unavailable at the last minute?"
Why it matters: Mechanical failures happen. Overbookings happen. The answer reveals whether the agent has contingency plans and relationships with backup operators, or whether they'll simply tell you to figure it out yourself when you arrive at the Alleppey jetty.
How to Verify a Kerala Travel Agency in 10 Minutes Online
Step 1: Google the business name + "reviews" + "Kerala"
Look for reviews on Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and Facebook. Check review dates — a sudden cluster of 5-star reviews in one month is a red flag. Look at 3-star and 4-star reviews: they tend to be more honest than either 5-star or 1-star.
Step 2: Check Google Maps Street View of their address
A physical office that exists on Street View — with a signboard, a real building, a business that can be seen — is a green flag. An address that shows a residential building, a virtual office, or doesn't exist at all is a significant red flag.
Step 3: Check the website domain age and registration
A website registered in the last 6 months with no historical presence is a warning. Use a WHOIS lookup tool to check when the domain was registered. Established businesses typically have domains registered 5+ years ago.
Step 4: Look for the founder or director name and verify it
Search the person's name on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google. A legitimate travel agency founder will have a verifiable professional history. If you can't find any trace of the person who claims to run the agency, that's concerning.
Step 5: Check Kerala Tourism Department's registered operator list
The Kerala Tourism Department maintains a registry of approved tour operators. A registered operator has passed a verification process. This isn't a guarantee of quality, but it's a legitimate floor of credibility.
⚠️ A note on pricing
If a quoted price is more than 25–30% below the average you've found elsewhere, something is being omitted or quality is being substituted. Kerala tour pricing has real costs: driver wages, fuel, hotel rack rates, houseboat fees, guide fees. There's a floor below which legitimate operations cannot go. Prices significantly below that floor are either a bait-and-switch (the hotel will be substituted) or the agency is operating without registration and cutting corners that may affect your safety.
